♦   Foreclosure Counseling: 

               The Minnesota Home Ownership Center works with a network of more than 20 different Minnesota-based non-profit and community organizations that offer Foreclosure Counseling services.   Specially-trained counselors can provide information on the foreclosure process and offer you personalized assistance to identify options you may be able to access to become or stay current; help you develop a household spending plan, or even negotiate on your behalf with your lender or servicer for re-payment strategies.  All counseling services are free and confidential.

 

 


                


♦   Borrowers Workshops: 

               The Minnesota Home Ownership Center is hosting a number of community events for homeowners facing foreclosure, and others that may be interested in learning about the foreclosure process in Minnesota.  You can ask questions and get free advice – confidentially – from non-profit foreclosure counselors and mortgage lenders.  These events are free and open to the public – no registration is required.  The events are “open-house” so feel free to stop by any time during the event.  Presentations providing general information on foreclosure will repeat throughout the evening.  Upcoming events include:

Hennepin County Taxpayer Services 
and Hennepin County Libraries.






♦   Other Action Steps 

              

•  Notify your lender as soon as you know your payment will be late.  They want to help.  They do not want to foreclose.  If you would like some tips on working with your lender, click here. 

•  Know the details of your mortgage loan.  Will your interest rate adjust and affect your monthly payment? 

•  Cut your expenses.  Make temporary sacrifices. 

•  Put your house payment first.  If you can't make a full payment, save what you can.




♦   Know Your Rights 
              

•  A sheriff's sale does NOT mean you have to move right away.  Contact a Foreclosure Counselor to learn about the foreclosure process in Minnesota, so you know what will happen, and when.

•  Beware of those offering a quick and easy fix.  Or those who want to charge a fee to solve the problem.  If you have questions about a program or 'solution' being offered, contact a Foreclosure Counselor before you sign anything.
